1973: Doc’s Marmoset
Doc's Marmoset Countdown to the 50th Futurity
Doc’s Marmoset posted the high score for the first two
go-rounds to win the inaugural Edgar Brown Memorial Trophy on her way to winning
the 1973 NCHA Futurity. Tom Lyons rode the Doc Bar mare he purchased from Dr.
Stephen Jensen and showed for Robert Condie. It was the third time in four years
that Jensen had bred the Futurity winner.
“Great horses don’t come along very often,” Lyons said.
“Doc’s Marmoset was the first horse to win the NCHA Futurity, NCHA Derby and
NCHA World Championship. She also won the Pacific Coast Derby, the AQHA World
Show and the Junior World Show.”
Doc’s Marmoset went on to produce earners of $259,000
including $1.7 million sire Smart Little Uno.

Smart Peppy Date was purchased May 31, 2008 by Victor
Almond, owner of 3V Performance Horses in Ponoka, Alberta.
This regal stallion left former owners Carl and Julia
Gerwien with a long list of accomplishments. He now stands
at Vic's ranch with confidence and anticipation to contine
his legacy.
Foaled March 31, 1995 by Wiens Ranch Company Inc. in
Sedalia, CO, Smart Peppy Date was an embryo transfer colt
sired by Smart Little Lena and Peppys Date. He boasts a deep
sorrel colour with a star marking and a left hind white
pastern. Smart Peppy Date began his training with his new
owners, Carl and Julia Gerwien of Willow Spring Ranch in
Nanton, Alberta, after his purchase in December 1996. Carl
developed Smart Peppy Date's talents for both the cutting
and working cow horse arenas. Smart Peppy Date suffered an
unfortunate injury while cutting at age 3. Back in training
at 4, this well healed talented horse won Canada's Greatest
Horseman Competition with Brad Pedersen.
Smart Peppy Date & Victor Almond
Smart Peppy Date's list of heirs include 103 registered
foals of which 39 are offspring performers. His heirs
share Smart Peppy Date's physical traits and demonstrate
winning abilities creating an impressive Sire Record.
Smart Peppy Date's performance record includes: Earner
of $36,490; 4th PCCHA 4-Year-Old Non Pro Stakes; Top 10
Gold Coast Winter Non Pro Classic Challenge; Canadian
Supreme Non Pro Classic Challenge Champion; Canadian Non
Pro Classic Co-Reserve Champion; Canadian Futurity Non
Pro Finals Co-Champion; 3rd Canadian Supreme 4-Year-Old
Open Derby.
Victor proudly boasts Smart Peppy Date as a gentleman.
"He is a perfect gentleman who loves a handful of oats,
loves to perform and loves his mares. Smart Peppy Date
is currently pasture breeding and will reside with his
girlfriend for the off season". Victor extends a special
thank you with sincere appreciation to Carl and Julia
Gerwien and family for their commendable work and
accomplishments with this great horse.
Doc Bar
Inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in
1993
Doc
Bar revolutionized the cutting industry in a way
never seen before or since.
The chestnut stallion was foaled in 1956 on Tom
Finley’s Arizona ranch. Doc Bar was by Lightning Bar
by Three Bars (TB) and out of Dandy Doll by Texas
Dandy. The chestnut colt was bred to run, but failed
miserably.
Earning a total of $95 in four outs, Doc Bar was
given to Charley Araujo of California to show at
halter. This endeavor seemed doomed to fail because
Doc Bar did not fit what the judge’s eye had been
groomed to see. The chestnut stood a scant 15 hands
and did not have the punched-together look of his
contemporaries.
The halter industry was ripe for change. With Araujo
at the lead and the stallion’s unique conformation,
the guidelines for halter horse champions were
altered almost overnight. Out of 15 shows, Doc Bar
won nine grand champion titles and one reserve
champion title.
Doc Bar attracted the attention of Dr. and Mrs.
Stephen Jensen of Double J Ranch in Paicines,
California. The couple had pieced together a
broodmare band of Poco Tivio, Hollywood Gold, King
and Leo mares, and was in the market for a stallion.
Doc Bar fit their needs and the couple bought him in
1963 for $30,000.
Over the following years, Doc Bar sired National
Cutting Horse Association Futurity winners, world
champions and top-10 horses. A few progeny include
Doc O’Lena, Dry Doc, Fizzabar and Doc’s Kitty. He
was the grandsire of Smart Little Lena, Tenino San,
Docs Sangria and Don N Willy.
In AQHA competitions, Doc Bar’s get amassed nearly
9,000 points and won multiple world championships.
The key to Doc Bar’s success was summed up by
Charlie Ward, manager of the Jensens’ ranch, “is
that he’s so consistent in his type. His colts are
all uniform and possess a lot of sense. They’re easy
to train, they have a lot of natural ability – every
one of them is cowy.”
Doc Bar died in 1992 at 36. He was inducted into the
American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 1993.
